Giving Our Love

by

2 Samuel 19:30 – And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.

When David returns to Jerusalem he meets Mephibosheth and questions why he didn’t follow him in the flight during Absalom’s revolt. Mephibosheth explains that his servant had “deceived him” by not getting him an ass to ride upon. He then accepts whatever judgment David gives him and offers the only thing he has ever had to offer the returning King – his love.

Mephibosheth was devoted to the King. He remembered how the King had found him and spared his life. Normally kings kill any descendents of the old monarchy, but David had mercy on Mephibosheth because of the covenant he had with Jonathan. He actually adopted Mephibosheth into his own family giving him a place at his table. Mephibosheth’s devotion was seen in that he relinquished everything he had (vs. 30). All he wanted was the king to return. Earthly possessions didn’t matter to him.

Mephibosheth was also dedicated to king David. Although Ziba slandered him (vs. 27 with 2 Sam. 16:1-4) he was still a true follower of David to the point that he forgot about himself (vs. 24). He couldn’t pamper himself when the king was out in the fields of war! He mourned until the King returned safely.

This love of Mephibosheth was also a great delight to him. He longed for the king’s return (vs. 30) and looked for him every day.

Our King, the Lord Jesus Christ, is in exile right now. Things aren’t too great under the rule of the wicked “god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4). But He promised that He would “come again” (John 14:3)! When He returns what will you have to give Him? Will be able to place your love at His precious feet?
