Peace Be Still!

Mark 4:37 – And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

Storms are a reality, not just in nature but in our Christian journey as well. There are some valuable lessons in this passage about storms and how to have victory in the midst of storms.

The clout of the storm was so bad that the Bible calls it a “great storm” (vs. 37). The disciples had been in storms before, but never like this. They actually thought they were going to die. It was strong and just as surprising. It seemed to come out of nowhere. The tranquil sea became a turbulent sea. That’s how the storms of life are, even for Christians.

The cause of the storm may be debated. They often are. Hindsight sometimes yields the answer, but many times we never know exactly why storms come. We know around Galilee the cool mountain air mixes with the warm rising air from the lake and often causes storms. But natural explanations only reveal part of the picture. Storms can be devilish. Those trials are intended to harm. Storms can be divine, intended to help.

The calming of the storm is accomplished by the sleeping Saviour (vs. 38). As man He had to sleep because His physical body required it, but as God He could speak peace to the troubled waters! The scared servant’s lack of faith was a result of not trusting the word of God. He said they were going to the other side; He does not lie. Their fear was not the right kind of fear, for it showed the littleness of their faith. He was at peace. They should have been looking at Him, calm and serene on the pillow instead of the raging storm around them. The sea became submissive by the voice of its creator.

Maybe you are in the middle of a storm. The Lord is in the ship with you. Don’t look at the storm. Keep your eyes on Him!
