Lessons from a Second Miracle

by

John 4:54 – This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

Can you name who was Vice President when Lincoln was in office? Not many can. It is Jesus’ first miracle, turning water to wine, and His last public miracle, when He raised Lazarus from the dead that we remember the most. But what about His second miracle, when He went back to Cana, where He spoke a word of healing for a dying boy over twenty miles away? There are many lessons here.

The request of this miracle was made by a man willing to travel up hill a day’s journey from Capernaum to Cana. He heard Jesus was in the area so he went to seek the Lord (Isa. 55:6). His son was at the point of death (vs. 47) so he was quite persistent (vs. 49), something the Lord never seems to take offence with.

After hearing the man’s request Jesus rebuked him (vs. 48) saying, “Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.” Many are looking for a visible reason to believe. Do you believe in the proof or the Person of Jesus Christ? Do you set your own criteria for the object of faith? What if God doesn’t answer your prayers, are you still going to believe IN Him! Faith is not believing what you wish is going to come true. That is presumption! God is not obligated to answer your every whim. Our Faith must be IN God, not in what we think or hope to happen.

Finally, the reason for this miracle is to show the power of Christ. Although He is twenty miles away He heals the boy. It also shows the favor of God. “Not many noble, are called” (1 Cor. 1:26). This nobleman demonstrated faith, and assurance in the word of God (vss. 50-53). He took Christ at His word. He was confident this second miracle was a sure thing!
